Mr. Tony Law

I've recently started enjoying the comedy stylings of Tony Law...so I drew this cartoon after the wife bought us tickets to see his show in Norwich on Nov 14th. I instagrammed a photo of this yesterday, but here is a scan that I have cleaned up a bit in Photoshop!

Comics art update...

So, here's an artwork update...

1. Hepatitis Z, Written and Drawn by Kel Winser
Here is a sneak preview...in other words unlettered...of the first of an 8-page Zombie Horror/Comedy I am doing for Borderline Press. Out later this winter, this has to be finished by the beginning of next week and I still have the other 7 pages to ink!! Better crack on...

2. ...However, below is the first page in the eagerly awaited The Gee Bees, part 3...as the Zombie comic has thrown a slight timing spanner in the works - I am attempting to ink both issues (one 8 pages, the other 9 pages) simultaneously! So like I said before, better get cracking!

Comics News!

Among the THOUSANDS of projects I got going on, I've written and will be drawing a zombie story for an anthology being produced by Borderline Press. Here's a design/concept drawing for it.

Hepatitis Z is the story of James, the unsuspecting carrier of the most lethal sexually transmitted disease known to the human race.

Look out for the Borderline Press zombie comic anthology, Winter 2013!

Illustration Friday: Fresh

A quick on this week for Illustration Friday's weekly topic: FRESH.

I decided to open a 'fresh', new brush and give it a go. Turns out to be quite crap, but at least makes good splatter textures which I like to put into my illustrations every now and then.

Cheers, comments welcome!

USER, Page 1 - A colour test.

Here is USER, page 1. A colour test...this has worked out better than I could have imagined! I think I will be carrying on like this for all 24 pages! (I better have enough paper in stock!)

User - A One-Shot Comic

So, I'm working on several projects right now and one of them is a horror comic called USER. My good friend Anthony Melton, of Bloody Cuts fame, wrote a screenplay which was not going to be made into a short horror film (well, not yet anyway!) and so he passed it onto me to see if I could have a go at converting it into the comics medium.

I really dug his story and a couple of night of nights later I had transposed it into a 24 page comic script, the art I am now working on. To date, I am exactly half way (so on page 13) through the drawings and boy, have I given myself a challenge here...but it is paying off! Without giving too much away, here is a 6-page preview of the book. It doesn't give much away as it's only in pencils and there aren't any speech bubbles, but the end product will be smashing!

Here's a peek into my process too. Sometimes I'll photograph myself in poses of whatever so that I can draw them into the panels - here is a look at panel 4 of page 12:

As you can see, there's a little bit of artistic license that goes into making these comics otherwise this scene would look less like a druid throwing a young girl but a hoody street yobbo!

Cheers, comments welcome!

Just A Sidekick

In case you haven't heard (and why would you!), Image Comics are due to release a comic called Sidekick in September. Two years ago, in September 2011 in fact, I released a comic called Sidekick. Having done my research, Image's comic bares absolutely no ressemblance to my own story, in fact it's probably better seeing as though it is written by J Michael Straczynski, however; it has prompted me to do something drastic to my current series. Far be it for me to take on the global conglomerate of which I collect several titles from, in the wake of a changing my publishing label to Beardy Boy Comics from Messy Fingers Comics - for personal and just plain fun reasons - I have decided to change the name of the series Sidekick to Just A Sidekick.
The new name still has many a narrative rationale and makes enough sense to continue in this tradition. It is also less likely to be taken by another comic company for their own story.

Now all that aside, check out the revamped covers to the series, which will now be printed in colour as well as a brand new cover to issue #2!

Cheers, comments welcome!

12th Doctor Illustration

Here is my take on what the 12th Doctor might just look like!

Along with Peter Capaldi as Doctor Who, I have also illustrated all 12 doctors, just working on the colouring right now, for a set of 12 (thankfully this makes an even set!!) art cards - getting ready for The Rift in Norwich, a Doctor Who convention on Sunday 18 August 2013.

Illustration Friday - Jungle

Sleepy Leopard.

Just as the topic JUNGLE changes over today I wanted to get this in. Jungle wasn't giving me too many ideas, but then I thought back to a the school trip I went on to Banham Zoo in Norfolk for activity week! Here is a sketch I did at the zoo which I worked on (a little!) afterwards.

Illustration Friday: ROBOT

These two were designs for puppets I did for hitRECord...a production company the actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt started about 5 years ago. He asks people in internetland to collaborate with him and his team on a variety of different projects. This time he is making a TV show and has been asking writers, illustrators, voice-over artists, film-makers, editors, musicians and countless other creative types to get involved.

I thought this illustration/design would be a good submission for ROBOT too!

Cheers!

Working on some hitRECord collabs!

Hey there...been working on some designs for hitRECord's latest project RE: Borders http://www.hitrecord.org/collaborations/7603

They want puppet designs and I came up with this:

It's pretty fun working on some stuff that will hopefully be seen by a creative individual you highly admire...!

Anyhoo - any creative and artistic types out there can get on board just head over to http://www.hitrecord.org/ and see what it's all about!

Illustration Friday: PROTEST

This week Illustration Friday's topic was PROTEST. I thought hard about this one as I didn't want to go for obvious ideas. I've done that before and wanted to stretch my imagination. I didn't want to paint some horrendous scene about Turkey or Egypt like in the news right now - I think we have enough visuals of that on television...instead, I went with a bit of a teacher's rant. For those of you who do not know, I teach art and design at a high school and our Secretary of State for Education, Michael Gove, is not a popular character. Now, he is a politician and being unpopular is generally one of the points on the person specification, however it is Gove's ideas that have got the teaching community riled up!
I'll keep it short as there are lots of articles and videos out in internetshire you can read and watch should you choose to, but my own PROTEST came about when Gove says that knowledge is the most important and should be taught in schools as a priority and pupils should learn facts and figures - of course understanding and creative thinking come very low down is seems. Hence this week's Illustration Friday protest is my take on 'facts and figures: Fax and (action) Figures.

While I was drawing these, seemingly odd things to be placed next to one another I decided to create a pattern as though it were for wallpaper or something. The effect was pretty cool!

Hope you enjoyed this week's Illustration Friday Topic, see you in a week or so!

Thanks...comments welcome!

UPDATE (already??)
I have submitted this piece to Joseph Gordon-Levitt's current hitRECord TV project RE: Patterns...let's hope this particular record of mine makes it onto his show! See the details here: http://www.hitrecord.org/collaborations/7556

Some new illustrations

Been working on some stuff for the recent project at hitRECord.org - Joseph Gordon-Levitt's creative productions company...I say creative productions plural, because he has done a heap of stuff from short films, animations, books, poetry, live shows. JGL heads the production company and gets other people around the world via the internet to collaborate with him and submit their 'RECords' to it. It's really good - once you figure out how it works!! JGL is now working on a TV show, that would be a collaborative TV show and he asks for writers, illustrators, animators, film editors, musicians and a load of other artistic types to help him on the project...here are a few illustrations I did for his TV shows...fingers crossed they get used in some form or another!

Illustration Friday: Equality

This week's Illustration Friday topic is EQUALITY. For this task I decided to look at quotes about equality in order to allow ideas for visuals to come to me. I interpreted one of the quotes I found into the illustration above.

Illustration Friday: Surveillance

Bit of an obvious one, but this week's Illustration Friday topic, SURVEILLANCE, made me think back to my Uni days when I had to watch Gene Hackman in The Conversation - a film about spying and surveillance...I know I'm probably missing a trick what with everything that's been going on in the media spying-wise!

Hope you like?! Comments welcome...thanks!

Illustration Friday: Sweet

'POUR THEM IN!'

This week's Illustration Friday topic is SWEET.

Just went and had a bit of fun with this. Chose the obvious route here, no massive thing to be said here, but fancied having a go at a retro style, 50s/60s sort of cartoon with the kid stuffing his face with Quality Streets!

Will try to push my ideas a bit further next week!

In other news, I have 3 comic projects on the go right now: The GeeBees #2, Sidekick #5 and a one-shot called User are currently at the 6 page stage with The GeeBees making the most progress having penciled all 9 pages in this chapter and still to ink 5 pages then colour the whole lot! Lots to do, on top of this I am working on a commission obtained by a contact I made at the Thought Bubble comic con in Leeds last November and a card for a friend's wedding!! Lots to tell, but little to show at this stage in the proceedings...look out for some snippets of things real soon!

Tata for now!

Illustration Friday: Tension

'Hey! Back up, I got the mother load!'

It was my wife's birthday yesterday, and to celebrate I made her this card...there are speech bubbles on the card as well, but I have decided to present the illustration only for this one. She has had a little obsession with pallets so that we can make our own garden furniture and that, so I decided to draw a joke based on that! It went down really well!!

Illustration Friday's topic this week is TENSION and I thought I'd present this piece as it shows a lot of tension in the weight of the pallets on the forklift truck. Pretty simple reason really, but the simplest answers are often the best (if I don't say so myself!!).

Illustration Friday: Liquid

This week, Illustration Friday's topic is LIQUID and this got me instantly thinking about phobias and my own phobia about deep waters in the sea and about feeling trapped and alone in the darkness.

I think using the watercolours in this way have captured the initial 'hit' of being dropped into the deepest part of the ocean with the depths of the unknown laying below!

Illustration Friday: FUTURE

I did an illustration for a colleague at work recently. She asked for a Super-Cupcake for a friend's birthday. I came up with this and thought that this could very well be a character I could develop in the future and as soon as I thought that, it became the illustration for this week's ILLUSTRATION FRIDAY!

Enjoy, comments welcome...!

Illustration Friday: TRIBUTE

This week on Illustration Friday, the theme is TRIBUTE. As I have been getting more and more into Game of Thrones, the idea above came to me while I was thinking through this piece. I was thinking of other sorts of tributes like those connected to sports heroes or war heroes, something a bit more political or current affairs, but then this idea just seemed more fun!

Hope you enjoy too...comments welcome.

Illustration Friday: Farewell

I recently said 'FAREWELL' to renting and joined the housing market, so here's a little self-portrait piece based on that idea and feeling. Fortunately for this piece I now live opposite the rented house so could glance across to see what it looks like!!

Illustration Friday: Train

This week's Illustration Friday is TRAIN and this is kind of a piece on tribute and celebration.

I wanted TRAIN to mean something about runners (as we in the UK held the Olympics last Summer - not that I'm massively patriotic or am one of those continuing to milk the proverbial cow, but the olympics is still very much on our collective consciousness). However, the recent Boston bombings and the fact the London Marathon went ahead anyway was kind of heroic in my mind and so this piece is a tribute to the runners who were hurt and those who were heroes and also those who had the determination to continue amidst the horror in the London Marathon. And not to forget all the innocent bystanders, helpers, first aiders, and emergency service people - we love and adore all of what you did to help too!

I am also dedicating this piece to all the people I know at the moment who are running for various charities. Admittedly and shamefully so, cannot afford to give cash to each and every one of you, but I have to some - I want to wish you all the very best of luck with your charitable pursuits and hope you raise plenty of good cash for the good causes!

Hope you all enjoy my drawing! Comments welcome, thanks!

Illustration Friday: WILD

This week, Illustration Friday's topic is WILD. I think the situation in North Korea is pretty wild at the moment so I went with this humourous offering of Kim Jong-Un farting out a ballistic missile - good luck K-Ju, just hope we don't get a world war 3!

Illustration Friday: Urban

For this week's Illustration Friday topic (Urban) I wanted to make something of a comparative notion on Urban Landscapes...combining the countryside and urban landscapes in one image. My ideas went so far into thinking about the animals in either environment, ones that are hunted/targeted by others as prey in one form or another. Other ideas that came to mind were the urbanisation of countrysides and small villages to get trade through tourism and also human beings destroying country landscapes to put up cheap housing (hence the reason the tower block scene is above). By the way, the animal in the countryside scene is a deer, not a horse...!

This image is a bit of a mish-mash of other images too. Below is a little insight to my process.

First I created a painting of the idea using watercolours.

I then scanned the painting, turned it into blue line and printed it so I could trace it with inks. I used a Platinum refillable brush pen and a Kuretake brush pen. Once dry, I scanned again and turned some lines dark red, brown and grey. The lines were changed and layered over the painting in Photoshop. I fiddled about with the opacity of all colour line layers until I was happy with the final mix.

Self Inflicted. A Future Shocks contest entry.

This is a contest piece I did for a 2000AD Future Shocks contest. Needless to say I did not write this nor did I win the contest. Learnt a lot by doing it and I have improved since I think!

This is also on my website, but you can read it better and clearer on the blog here!
