My EntryWoah!!!!! So that was a quick year!!<br />
<br />
I entered the Comica/Jonathan Cape/Observer Graphic Story Prize for the third year running now. I feel like I am getting somewhere with my work in terms of mood, context and themes, but still not quite nailing a style that will win - although with that being a 'fashion' thing, I may very well be in vogue next year!! They are still proving very good exercises in function and experimentation in comics and will probably bunch all these into a book at some point. In the meantime, enjoy them here!<br />
<br />
Cheers x<br />

This is my entry to the Comica/Jonathan Cape/The Observer Graphic Story Prize 2015. I found out today that I was unsuccessful in being shortlisted, so thought it was time to present my entry here. I like to keep things shtum until I hear back from the contest. Oh well, I will try again next year!<br />
<br />
My last entry, called 'The Chair', I thought was good, but this year is better. It's better in colours and tines but also in the drawing too. I feel like my competency and consistency has improved a lot since then. I dunno, what do you think out there!beardyboycomics.blogspot.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17919890399933411427noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8703945688193948864.post-29549344507041372282015-03-29T14:46:00.004+00:002015-03-29T14:46:39.472+00:00Illustration Friday: OutsideI've been playing around with textures on various pieces since learning a new masking technique in Photoshop. With this piece for Illustration Friday's weekly topic, <a href="http://www.illustrationfriday.com/" target="_blank">OUTSIDE</a>, I have blended the textures into the actual artwork instead of just using the textures for a background. This time, a sense of watercolour texture has been added to the digital colour applied to the figure. The figure in this came from a life drawing session and I thought I would do my version or interpretation of such paintings as Olympia by Manet or Venus of Urbino by Titian.<br />

<br />
Jeremy Clarkson has been a bit of a naughty boy. Causing a <a href="http://www.illustrationfriday.com/" target="_blank">RUCKAS</a> over the last week or so, throwing all his toys out of the pram when he allegedly lunged at a producer. Many of his views have been vocalised in some form or another and so I decided to illustrate this point. A slightly enlarged ego-head, his Tory blue boxing colours with some of the offended demography written on his knuckles. Red-faced he screams at the next victim to have pissed him off. I will be honest. I'm not a fan of his. He knows a great deal about cars and I have enjoyed his presenting of them on his TV shows, but apparently he isn't a very nice guy off the screen. Go figure!beardyboycomics.blogspot.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17919890399933411427noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8703945688193948864.post-74107374076400241442015-03-16T23:27:00.002+00:002015-03-16T23:32:31.142+00:00Illustration Friday: STRONGWell it has been a long while. Things have been busy in the Beardy Boy camp! I have a comic coming out soon which I will post some news about very very soon. In the meantime I have been plugging away at my illustration practice by taking part (as well for the first time in ages) in Illustration Friday's weekly one-word brief. This week it is <a href="http://illustrationfriday.com/" target="_blank">STRONG</a> and I felt like wanting to do something different, almost editorial. So, I took to The Guardian's website and searched for articles to do with the word 'strong'. <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/stage/2014/mar/23/mark-strong-interview-stark-bare-brutal-arthur-miller" target="_blank">I found a piece, an interview with Mark Strong</a>, and was struck by the first sentence, 'Mark Strong has an uncanny ability to make bad men sympathetic' and the following image sprung to mind. Enjoy...more soon!<br />

Sadly, I did not win nor come in as a runner up, but it felt good to do something for a purpose other than to print on a medium scale and sell locally or at cons. It hasn't put me off entering future Jonathan Cape/Observer/Comica contests and I might even be entering one or two other comics, illustration or story telling contests over the next year.<br />
<br />
You can read about the winning entry on the Guardian's website <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/books/2014/oct/26/observer-cape-comica-graphic-short-story-prize-2014-rachel-cooke" target="_blank">here</a>.<br />
<br />
There is also a contestant in the form of Myfanwy Tristram who has an extensive list of entries on her <a href="http://myfanwytristram.com/2014/09/30/observercomicacape-graphic-short-story-contest-round-up-2014/" target="_blank">BLOG</a>.<br />
<br />
Here is my piece for the contest which when I place side-by-side with the winning entries (and compare with some of the others on Myfanwy's blog) I feel somewhat unconfident, but I still like the story I produced even if it might have rubbish dialogue - which I feel I rushed a bit. I also sent my entry in the post the day before the deadline by special delivery so it would arrive before noon! I think I will send competition entries in the post a little earlier from now on, that was stressful!<br />
<br />
Anyway, I hope if finds some kindly readers out there that do like it and might give me some good critical pointers...cheers!<br />

Part 6 has been started and a third of the way through. Parts 5 and 6 are getting done as a double whammy! In the meantime I have been hard at work on some commissions as well as busting my proverbial gluteus in the classroom! Which is where this little tidbit comes in. I am asked every so often how I go about making the art that I do. Or <i>my process!</i><br />
<i><br /></i>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKJiHxxRkC362PM11etjtU60k_EKUvjMu0c1i1x2mIzkz39vzb5pnCpoCMkLsEPIYAfnVu4x7cfISY7YF8ocVDEWEYuEQ9poUTv6rssy9RUpKgtZbjeJEFPij2gQMTT_fnw65wBbpOgtA/s1600/HB-notes.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhKJiHxxRkC362PM11etjtU60k_EKUvjMu0c1i1x2mIzkz39vzb5pnCpoCMkLsEPIYAfnVu4x7cfISY7YF8ocVDEWEYuEQ9poUTv6rssy9RUpKgtZbjeJEFPij2gQMTT_fnw65wBbpOgtA/s1600/HB-notes.jpg" height="640" width="456" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Firstly, I sit down with a sketchbook and <i>work it out! </i>I think about my idea, what I want to do. For my recent Hellboy art contest piece, I thought about the character and what situation he might be in before some danger strikes. Therefore, I got a story into a one-image piece. Why is Hellboy in the city, on top of a roof drinking beer? Where has that tentacled monster come from? What happens next? All great potential story ideas before this scene and after. Also, sorry about the bad handwriting and spelling!!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbIUwxqSYbUuGAL-YzvXovsr3PPGmp_MLEWq3Leu1-kPWLqY6iRBLtcz5txugevMdbPxa_E1J3WSI1CSMMBI_cVquWPEqAy9PO7xXr3HlYos4157lzf413NGpNu6uhwiswkOI4M7FWG3w/s1600/HB-gray.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbIUwxqSYbUuGAL-YzvXovsr3PPGmp_MLEWq3Leu1-kPWLqY6iRBLtcz5txugevMdbPxa_E1J3WSI1CSMMBI_cVquWPEqAy9PO7xXr3HlYos4157lzf413NGpNu6uhwiswkOI4M7FWG3w/s1600/HB-gray.jpg" height="640" width="456" /></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Once I have fleshed out my idea, I will get drawing. I use a Pentel mechanical pencil (I have tried so many in my time as an artist and have settled on a particular one now!) mostly because it feels good to draw with and I draw on A4, so quite small. I also do all comic page penciling on A4. I am very sketchy when I draw and this will get cleaned up in the next few stages. However, at this point I can make correction upon correction until it goes the way I want it to, or feels right - especially with poses; they have to feel real! Also at this stage I can decide whether to change some things on the drawing or leave it to computer edits - in this case, the head is a little too large. I keep that in mind as I move through the rest of the processes.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiE56L2_i9ObJZqD26W5ET43M3FOrK1W_qlhpzxkAFzT65i2ViYgYJCigOkDr5QA6peYhPd11uK0BbbVSSbjTdvVVajczVm-yV5h4yi3DxuK4bsZ4pD11yAzPcmC7dLEmxxfSKWUfJD90/s1600/HB-blue.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiE56L2_i9ObJZqD26W5ET43M3FOrK1W_qlhpzxkAFzT65i2ViYgYJCigOkDr5QA6peYhPd11uK0BbbVSSbjTdvVVajczVm-yV5h4yi3DxuK4bsZ4pD11yAzPcmC7dLEmxxfSKWUfJD90/s1600/HB-blue.jpg" height="640" width="448" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I next scan the pencil drawing into the computer and change the lines blue using Photoshop. I print it out onto A3, enlarging it as I go. The reason for drawing inks on a bigger surface is simply the tools I am using to refine the artwork are thicker than chunkier than the pencil so I double the paper size to get in those details. Some artists I have seen change lines green or red. I prefer blue because it is a calming colour, not too in-your-face and vibrant. The reason for changing the line colour is the coloured line can be erased a the click of a button instead of having to spend too much time, effort and making a mess using an eraser to rub out pencil lines - which also tends to fade out the ink work I've just spent hours doing!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZetoNTh8LftnOTWJKbOdP4wgwT83xROafMb7BGDeJfYz_EkUcgcHrY67FcioaCk6BcF6p5bH03o4IZHN0jWc0wYdpMLLXUbRGyoK8onZ9wBF6Kl6l97tZ492uGuHkSe_heIzVagS9Lb8/s1600/HB-inks.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZetoNTh8LftnOTWJKbOdP4wgwT83xROafMb7BGDeJfYz_EkUcgcHrY67FcioaCk6BcF6p5bH03o4IZHN0jWc0wYdpMLLXUbRGyoK8onZ9wBF6Kl6l97tZ492uGuHkSe_heIzVagS9Lb8/s1600/HB-inks.jpg" height="640" width="451" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So now onto inking. I use a range of different materials and tools. Kuretake brushpens, Pentel brushpen, but in this case I used a Twist Grip No.2 brush - one with a good point in it. I tried very hard to not fill this image in with too much heavy black shading which I tend to overkill much! Once it is inked over the blue line, A3 print out I scan this version in and make the blues disappear! At this stage I edit anything else, like the head. Did you notice it is ever-so-slightly smaller than the pencil copies?!?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDIUN1F6ayznltH_CnEiGYaKnt0hO5BY0rmWA32Nf5L_9BPNbnqviFpP_4VaXcdaDJP9WNTMZKfcLiqd4ga67GsM27xg2-b82xWsg81az5c30MyQaKkMHSPvYpV1gYmb5yymj3cUNS5-8/s1600/HB-colours.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDIUN1F6ayznltH_CnEiGYaKnt0hO5BY0rmWA32Nf5L_9BPNbnqviFpP_4VaXcdaDJP9WNTMZKfcLiqd4ga67GsM27xg2-b82xWsg81az5c30MyQaKkMHSPvYpV1gYmb5yymj3cUNS5-8/s1600/HB-colours.jpg" height="640" width="456" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And that brings me onto colours! Now, among all my other tools, and quite fortunately I print the black edited and cleaned up black lines back onto A4 card stock (using an A4 laser printer). Toner from the laser printer does not run or smudge like ink jet so it's good for painting watercolours over the top as in the example above. You get great effects with watercolours and it's great to be able to make clean line art combine with watercolour without fiddling for ages with the first-hand line work that is safe and can be re-scanned or used for other purposes if need be.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifVkg6wft3l53OOqwMkasZZ6ZROgKvMULdrPYBray9tDZIV5I7WHnBtJbIemT38EDsQs77AL0tEsLFA0a404q-BTQjRBkGD6c_kB1F07y660zaXvvVHE9wwNeyiBXHIc1thve0bulJYAc/s1600/HB-FINAL.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifVkg6wft3l53OOqwMkasZZ6ZROgKvMULdrPYBray9tDZIV5I7WHnBtJbIemT38EDsQs77AL0tEsLFA0a404q-BTQjRBkGD6c_kB1F07y660zaXvvVHE9wwNeyiBXHIc1thve0bulJYAc/s1600/HB-FINAL.jpg" height="640" width="442" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The absolute final stage is a little colour editing using Photoshop. I felt in the original scan, the colours were too flat and there needed to be a little depth to differentiate the main features from the detailed backgrounds thus making Hellboy and the danger element stand out. It also enable the city to look more dirty, aged and used. I was also thought about isolating the 'Hotel' and 'XXX' signs to make them look illuminated which kind of worked out well.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Hope that is comprehensive enough - shout me some questions or comments below and I will be happy to answer best I can!</div>

This evening, I have been finishing off the pencils to the latest issue of <a href="http://www.thegeebeescomic.co.uk/">The GeeBees Comic</a> as well as having a good night of telly. Arrow and The Walking Dead, two favourites of mine at the moment that just keep getting better and better. So I doodled one themed cartoon during each show!</div>

I know it looks like I can't think of anything else, or a cliché or whatever, but the first film I saw Harold Ramis in was Ghostbusters. Egon was also my favourite character and I am not just saying that! I thought the others were funny in their own way, but Spengler had some of the best facial reactions and lines in both movies. Ramis had a way of making exposition sound interesting!<br />

Here is a visual tribute -<br />

So, here's an artwork update...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1. Hepatitis Z, Written and Drawn by Kel Winser</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is a sneak preview...in other words unlettered...of the first of an 8-page Zombie Horror/Comedy I am doing for <a href="http://www.borderline-press.com/">Borderline Press</a>. Out later this winter, this has to be finished by the beginning of next week and I still have the other 7 pages to ink!! Better crack on...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhmDFy2KnrHDuUeZNrBhNWGVxmua3Kg8erF8cJG5X1LUpSh_dCd44M2ag7HfZyoxwsOVCysvJw36iucxV3ITG2Glevp2YyN_yEhIuu57DYHrlAcrs6Tsk79dK3bqeCnu1S6e72J_lXWMc/s1600/HZ1-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhmDFy2KnrHDuUeZNrBhNWGVxmua3Kg8erF8cJG5X1LUpSh_dCd44M2ag7HfZyoxwsOVCysvJw36iucxV3ITG2Glevp2YyN_yEhIuu57DYHrlAcrs6Tsk79dK3bqeCnu1S6e72J_lXWMc/s640/HZ1-1.jpg" width="452" /></a></div>
<br />
2. ...However, below is the first page in the eagerly awaited The Gee Bees, part 3...as the Zombie comic has thrown a slight timing spanner in the works - I am attempting to ink both issues (one 8 pages, the other 9 pages) simultaneously! So like I said before, better get cracking!<br />

Here's a design/concept drawing for it.<br />
<i><br /></i>

<br />
I decided to open a 'fresh', new brush and give it a go. Turns out to be quite crap, but at least makes good splatter textures which I like to put into my illustrations every now and then.<br />
<br />
Cheers, comments welcome!<br />

<br />
Here is USER, page 1. A colour test...this has worked out better than I could have imagined! I think I will be carrying on like this for all 24 pages! (I better have enough paper in stock!)<br />
<br />
Cheers, comments welcome!beardyboycomics.blogspot.comhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17919890399933411427noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8703945688193948864.post-1760543395590341222013-08-09T18:13:00.001+00:002013-08-09T18:15:45.016+00:00User - A One-Shot ComicSo, I'm working on several projects right now and one of them is a horror comic called <i>USER. </i>My good friend <a href="http://www.anthonymelton.co.uk/" target="_blank">Anthony Melton</a>, of <a href="http://www.bloodycuts.co.uk/" target="_blank">Bloody Cuts</a> fame, wrote a screenplay which was not going to be made into a short horror film (well, not yet anyway!) and so he passed it onto me to see if I could have a go at converting it into the comics medium.<br />
<br />
I really dug his story and a couple of night of nights later I had transposed it into a 24 page comic script, the art I am now working on. To date, I am exactly half way (so on page 13) through the drawings and boy, have I given myself a challenge here...but it is paying off! Without giving too much away, here is a 6-page preview of the book. It doesn't give much away as it's only in pencils and there aren't any speech bubbles, but the end product will be smashing!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJHq5dVF9gRJ0UWkadumqhyphenhyphensfDm3ztXqzWlSVVtPojB6NPL4F1z6aqoii0ceaOmwdQP1TbQGOfHI17S9EVZqf84bGuAYn5odt6D9TZfU-v-_SBHMgFxxWL0hmZ-9yOoo0Ktv39O91EJ0c/s1600/user-news2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="604" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJHq5dVF9gRJ0UWkadumqhyphenhyphensfDm3ztXqzWlSVVtPojB6NPL4F1z6aqoii0ceaOmwdQP1TbQGOfHI17S9EVZqf84bGuAYn5odt6D9TZfU-v-_SBHMgFxxWL0hmZ-9yOoo0Ktv39O91EJ0c/s640/user-news2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Here's a peek into my process too. Sometimes I'll photograph myself in poses of whatever so that I can draw them into the panels - here is a look at panel 4 of page 12:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglLPyySGu3pZTlMEW1s8peWIDM9ZdJODLkLv9ZnigQdOGFyzKugSqnVl43SsQMQEjXaAIV3HYzAnzlIiusPjPgu0fQbj-EE5pkHVwzJP5g1cAtaDFjTMWEPM6snjN1I2fZleUr3_p1SXY/s1600/user-news1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="246" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglLPyySGu3pZTlMEW1s8peWIDM9ZdJODLkLv9ZnigQdOGFyzKugSqnVl43SsQMQEjXaAIV3HYzAnzlIiusPjPgu0fQbj-EE5pkHVwzJP5g1cAtaDFjTMWEPM6snjN1I2fZleUr3_p1SXY/s640/user-news1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As you can see, there's a little bit of artistic license that goes into making these comics otherwise this scene would look less like a druid throwing a young girl but a hoody street yobbo!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Cheers, comments welcome!</div>

Two years ago, in September 2011 in fact, I released a comic called <i>Sidekick</i>. Having done my research, Image's comic bares absolutely no ressemblance to my own story, in fact it's probably better seeing as though it is written by J Michael Straczynski, however; it has prompted me to do something drastic to my current series. Far be it for me to take on the global conglomerate of which I collect several titles from, in the wake of a changing my publishing label to Beardy Boy Comics from Messy Fingers Comics - for personal and just plain fun reasons - I have decided to change the name of the series <i>Sidekick</i> to <i>Just A Sidekick</i>.<br />
The new name still has many a narrative rationale and makes enough sense to continue in this tradition. It is also less likely to be taken by another comic company for their own story.<br />
<br />
Now all that aside, check out the revamped covers to the series, which will now be printed in colour as well as a brand new cover to issue #2!<br />
<br />
Cheers, comments welcome!<br />
